Nokia Update
We discuss the following and more:
“MeeGo becomes an open-source, mobile operating system project. MeeGo will place increased emphasis on longer-term market exploration of next-generation devices, platforms and user experiences. Nokia still plans to ship a MeeGo-related product later this year.”
Alberto Torres steps down. (he took over from Ari Jaaksi on the open source work)
Intel need new partners for flagship devices. Nokia probably commited to release at least one Intel/Meego device?
Meego now in ‘smart devices’
one device from Nokia this year.
Qt – No Qt for Windows.

MeeGo devices weren’t happening until later in the year.

MeeGo slowed down open source strategy too much for Nokia

Smartphones are now mainstream, will we see focus on tablets, mids, smart pcs as new business?

MeeGo? ( jkk: will stay proto as Maemo was )
“MeeGo-related open source device, which we plan to ship later this year. Though our plans for MeeGo have been adapted”

Netbooks
AMD fusion performance numbers. GPU up, CPU down, Battery life down.
Lenovo S10 199 euro, Single core now ‘budget’ category?
ASUS Eee PC R051PEM N550 for 299 Euros
Sunbook. Pixel Qi on netbook. $795 – Price for (10-20% battery life)
No Lenovo Thinkpad x120e (Fusion) for western Europe.

Smart- devices
WebOS TouchPad – Webos, apps, hardware.

I’ll be hosting 2 live sessions today that I hope you’ll be able to join in on. The first is the MeetMobility Computex Podcast with Sascha and JKK out in Taiwan, myself back in the studio and special guest, Joanna Stern from Engadget joining us from New York. That will start at 1500 CEST (9am New York, 9pm Taipei, other times here.) and you can join in by tuning to MeetMobility.com/live It will be recorded and available later today.

The second event is a live open presentation and Q&A on the Dell Streak. That will start at 2100 CEST (Midday San Francisco, 2000 UK, other times here.) I don’t have a full retail model but the device I have allows me to show you around the device, demonstrate some features, give you some thoughts and answer your questions. So far the device is living up to all my expectations with the extra bonus that the battery life appears to be better than I thought. Unfortunately JKK can’t join us because he’s still out in Taipei and by the time he gets back to his studio on Wednesday, I’ll be away on another commitment until the week after. We might have a few Streak owners from the UK joining the chat though so it will be the perfect chance to get together to talk about the device from multiple perspectives. Video and chat will be running at Carrypad.com/live. I’ll be bringing the Sony Ericsson X10, Viliv S5 and Archos 5 for comparison. See you there.

We’re back, safe and sound, from CeBIT 2009 and we’ve got a lot to talk about. In this 1hr 15min podcast we cover the mobile computing highlights from CeBIT 2009 across the netbook and mobile computing sector. We also talk about how we covered the whole show with nothing but MIDs, netbooks and 3G connectivity. Yup, all the videos, podcast and written content was created on netbooks and UMPCs and uploaded via 3G.

Meetmobility Best of CeBIT Award.

The ‘best of’ award is something we’re going to continue to do when we attend an event and for CeBIT 2009 we’ve decided to make two awards.

Best Manufacturer Award goes to ASUS for continued development around the Eee brand. Design and quality remain high and new usage scenarios are being considered all the time. Expansion out into other product segments makes complete sense and it shows that Asus are not afraid to take risks.

Best Product Award goes to the Novatel Mifi. This fantasticly simple, small and useful battery-powered 3G/Wifi router could find a place in every mobile computing kit bag. We are all looking forward to testing, and buying one!

You can also find the podcast on Mevio where it’s available in a number of formats and on iTunes. You can also subscribe via RSS.

Podcast notes: Total running time: 1hr 12mins

How we worked using netbooks, mids and 3G all week!

ASUS T91, T101H, Seashell 1008HA, keyboard

Gigabyte netbooks.
